1/ Student Awards:  
Our annual student award ceremony was held on Thurs Sept 29 th . This was a great evening of celebration for our award recipients and their proud parents. A sincere thank you to all of our local sponsors in the community. Without  their support the event could not have taken place.

2/ Parent Council: The new committee of the Parents Council have been elected since our last newsletter. The officers are: Chairperson – Josephine Coughlan, Secretary – Ellen Fitzgibbon and Treasurer - Kay Nolan. Each  year group  have parent representatives on the committee also. At the moment the group are organizing dates for their annual fundraising events. More on this later.

3/ Student Council: Student council elections have taken place over the past few weeks. Well done to all candidates whether you got voted in or not. The new committee is:

4/ Comhairle na nOg:
4 students represented St Fanahans College at  Comhairle na nOg in the Clarion Hotel Cork on Fri last. They were Megan Kirkbride, Jamie Hannon, Eoin Coughlan & Patricia O Gorman. An Taoiseach Enda Kenny made a surprise visit   to the event and met with the students.

5/Young Scientist of the year: A 2 nd year team have been entered in the 2012 B.T. Young Scientist Competition. The team consists of James Hackett, Mai Kenneally  & Miriam Coughlan. Dr Tim Butler our science teacher is mentoring the group. Their  project involves carrying out an energy/waste audit of the school and improving the "green" credentials of the school through recycling, composting & awareness campaigns.  As part of the contest the group from St Fanahans have developed links with " Bulmers"  and Cork Institute of Technology.

6/ Home-Economics: 3 of our P.L. students did us proud last Thursday night cooking with Chef Martin Shanahan from "Fishy Fishy" in Kinsale. The demonstration took place in the town hall and it was a fantastic success. Our celebrity  team of chefs  were Patricia O Gorman, Eimer Mc Grath & Rachel O Donnell. The girls cooked cod goujouns in a tasty wrap with side salad.

7/Careers:
All senior cycle students travelled to The Rochestown Park Hotel with Ms Griffin & Ms Twomey last Tuesday. They spent  time viewing the many stands from the colleges around Ireland and they asked questions and gathered information on their future  careers.
Links with Dairygold have been made again this year. L.C.A.1 students & P.L’s will make a site visit to Dairygold next Fri as part of our "Business Initiative Mentoring Programme"

8/Certificate in Youth Leadership & Community Action:
This exciting programme is being run in conjunction with Mitchelstown Youth Café and Foroige. 5 students from P.L. will have the opportunity to take a place on the course which is accredited   by the National University of Ireland Galway. (N.U.I. Galway)

9/ Sport:
Volleyball teams have been set up for 1 st and 2 nd years and they are training every Wed  @ lunchtime. Competions will begin after Mid-Term.
Junior Girls have a soccer match this Wed. It will be held here V Midleton College.
Our U16 footballers travelled to Milstreet recently to play Ballingeary in the Munster Championship. Unfortunetly they proved too good for us on the day.

10/ Other School Activities:
Formula 1 in schools:
Another Formula 1 team has been set up in the school. The team name is "Titanium KX"  and consists of Jason Lane, Rachel Connolly, Tiernan O Brien, John O Shea, Sean Keane & Eamon Kelly. A submission is now being prepared for  for the Regional Finals in Nov.
Driver Theory: 14 students began their Driver Theory Classes recently. This is being run through Ballyhoura and Home School Liaison. Classes take place every Tue evening after school.
Maths Week: Maths Week ran from Oct 15 th – 22 nd. All students in the school participated  in a maths quiz to mark Maths Week. Congratulations to Conor Coughlan (Junior) and Megan Kirkbride (Senior) winners.
Science Workshops:
4 th Class boys from C.B.S. have being coming up to take part in science workshops with our 1 st  year students. The boys got to experience all aspects of science including the bending of light, using microscopes, evaporation,  chromatography and data sensors. This was a great experience for all students. This was run through H.S.C.L. and Mr Butler.
Halloween Bake Sale:
Leaving Certificate students are holding a cake sale this Wed at morning break. All proceeds will go to the children’s ward at C.U.H. Parents will also have the opportunity to buy cakes that evening at the parent  teacher  meeting.  
1 st year pumpkin carving competition:
This is being held in 1 st year science classes in the run  up to Halloween. Our students are experiencing how to grow vegetables both inside and in a polytunnel. This science initiative aims to get students  involved with food and where it originates.

11/ Dates for your diary:
Wed Oct 26 th Parent Teacher Meeting for  1 st,3 rd, Leaving Certificate & L.C.A.2 students. 4:00-5:45p.m. Please try your very best to attend. (Remember  to support cake sale here)
Mid Term Break Mon Oct 31 st – Nov 4 th inclusive.
St Fanahans Day Nov 25 th Classes finish at 12:50 Buses will run
