February 2012

1/ OpenDay:
St Fanahan’s Open night will be held on Thursday February 9 th. Students from the local primary schools will visit the college from 3:00p.m.onwards. They will tour the college and participate in workshops along the way. Parents of 6 th class pupils are invited in from 6:15p.m.and the principals address will take place in the canteen at approx 6:30p.m. Our own students will finish school at 12:05 that day and buses will not run at this time.

2/ Parents Council:

Our active Parents Council have a busy agenda for the coming months.
March 29 th & 30 th ~~ Bag Pack at Super Valu. Help will be needed for this so please contact a parent council member or HSCL if you can offer a time slot.
April 23 rd ~~ Bingo at St Fanahans College. 8:30p.m.
May 13 th ~~ Car Boot Sale at St Fanahans College Car Park. All traders welcome. More details on this later.
Our Parents council do Trojan work to benefit the students at St Fanahans and we thank them for their continued dedication.
Next Meeting Tue March 27 th at 7:30p.m

3/ Pre Exams:
Pre Exams are underway and will run up to Fri 24 th Feb with some disruptions due to the Open Day. Ms Cashman has circulated all details to pupils involved. Lunch time will be from 12:20 -1:10 on the days that exams are being held.

4/Science:
Congratulations to 2 nd year science students who have entered a project into the finals of the 2012 ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards. The students are very excited about this competition. More news on this later.

5/ Careers:

5 th year & LCA 1 students were visited by staff of Dairygold last Wednesday. The workshop included C.V. preparation and interview skills. All students will have mock interviews on Wed Feb 8 th.


6/ School Tour:
1 st & 2 nd years will travel to Delphi on Mar 28 th 29 th & 30 th. Students are encouraged to continue saving for this.

7/ Home School Community Liaison:
The Seasons for Growth/Living with Loss programme will commence at the Ozanam Centre on Tue Feb 21 st for 8 weeks. The student course will run from 4p.m. to 5:30p.m.and the adult course will run from 7:30 to 9p.m. Places are still available. Elma can be contacted on 086-0412952 to secure a place.
Community Grants ~ Community Grant Application Forms are now available from Cork Co Council for any group that wishes to apply for funding. €100,000 has been made available for the electoral area of Mitchelstown/Fermoy.
Cookery ~ Cookery Classes are continuing with Eric on Friday mornings from 11-1.
Literacy/Numeracy: Parents are encouraged to continue to check in on your son/daughters reading progress at http://ukhosted20.renlearn.co.uk/2259572/homeconnect
Save the website address under "favourites" because it is a very long one to be typing in every time.
Maths Millionaire is being run with Mr Connollys 1 st year maths class at the moment. Parents are invited in to take part every Friday morning from 10:15-11:00
Fitness Classes: Elma hopes to run a fitness class/circuit training class after Mid Term for 5 or 6 weeks. No particular day or time has been arranged yet. If you think you might be interested please contact her. Classes will be free of charge. Spread the word!!!!!!!

8/ Night Classes:
Registration for Night classes takes place tonight Tue Feb 7 th at 7:00-8:30p.m. Computers, Beauty & Style, Asian Cookery, Hair styling, Spanish, Photography and upholstery are just some of what is on offer. Further details from Ms O Keeffe on 025-24314. Classes commence on Tue Feb 21 st.

Thurs Mar 29 th & Fri Mar 30 th ~ Bag Pack Fundraiser at Super Valu. Money raised here goes towards next years free book scheme. All parents are asked to help out.

Mon April 16 th ~ School Re-opens.
