St Fanahan’s College is part of the Home School Community Liaison Scheme (H.S.C.L.), which aims to help parents avail of the best education opportunities for their son/daughter.
St Fanahan’s College has a shared Home School Liaison Officer with C.B.S. Primary School. Elma Twomey is our H.S.C.L. officer here at St Fanahan’s College. She works in partnership with parents to support them in the education of their children.
Home School is about building bridges between the parents, the school and the community. It is about helping parents to realise their own potential as the primary educators of their children.
Home visits are really the spade work of the Home School Liaison Teacher. “Sitting at a kitchen table and talking with a mother about the good of her child is at the core of what I do”, says Elma.
Setting up classes that are of interest to the parents is also an important aspect of the H.S.C.L. Home School is about involving the parents in the life of the school, e.g. paired reading, science for fun, cookery, flower arranging etc.
One of the main aims of Home School is welcoming parents into the school and making them feel at home here. We want to develop and build positive, trusting relationships with families.
Elma works in St Fanahan’s Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays and can be contacted on 086-
